ALCALÁ VARGAS

A memorable repertoire of the Spanish artist Josep Alcalá Vargas (1923 - 1993).

Figurative painter and art critic, the Catalan artist Josep Alcalá Vargas imbued his painting with characters from the popular milieu and an expressive language, seeking the limits of the grotesque.

Alcalá Vargas did not rub shoulders with the Catalan artistic cenacle. His art is notable for his portraits of the city's underworld and the society in which he lived: bullfighters, civil guards, clowns, buffoons, prostitutes or simply family scenes of the utmost humility. The way he presented his paintings, always on cardboard, reinforces his idea and commitment to an art that comes from the street and its characters.

He was also a member of the World Organisation of the Periodical Press and took part in several events organised by the Barcelona Press Association.
